SHOT Show isn’t just firearms and firearm accessories, there’s plenty of “regular” gear and equipment there too. One of the more interesting things I saw was Hollow Socks. Their aesthetically pleasing booth and displays caught my attention, along with the spiel one of their reps was giving an attendee. Curious to see what set them apart, I settled in and joined the conversation.
They’re socks, what can they do to set themselves apart? “Alpaca” is a word that can be seen across the Hollow booth, and I kept wondering what clothing industry jargon that was. Turns out it literally means an alpaca, as in the South American mammal. Hollow makes their socks out of alpaca wool, which is something I haven’t seen before. They claim that this material is significantly more durable, moisture wicking, and temperature agnostic than typical sheep’s wool. Is that true? I don’t know, but it stands out to me, and reeled me in further.
Christian, one of the Hollow reps showed off an upcoming version of their alpaca wools socks. This version features a slightly different blend, with small breaks in the reinforcements near the heel, ankle, and toes. These breaks are supposed to improve breathability, leading to quicker drying in situations where you cannot air your feet out regularly. Military style rucks are the primary example given here, though general outdoors use is also mentioned.
As someone who’s worn traditional wool socks for the better part of a decade, I’m curious to see how alpaca compares. I will be picking up a pair for myself in the near future. If you’re curious like me, check out Hollow socks >>HERE<<.
