Sabre is one of the biggest names in the pepper spray and personal defense game. Their product lineup is massive, with something for everyone, and some things for no one. While their recent pivot to projectile launchers is less than exciting for me, a couple of newer products are appealing.
The first item I noticed was Sabre’s “Smart” pepper spray? How can pepper spray be smart? I asked myself the same question. It turns out this cannister syncs via Bluetooth to an app on the user’s phone. From here, the app sends a text to a pre-determined group of your contacts alerting them when your pepper spray is deployed. This alert contains a constantly-updating GPS location, if selected, for recipients. Sabre also offers a subscription service to connect your app to a third-party call center which contacts law enforcement on your behalf.
This isn’t what first came to mind when I read “smart” on the packaging, but I think it makes a lot of sense. While your contacts can’t help you in the moment, this could shorten the timeline for law enforcement to respond. As a newer parent, I also see value in knowing when your children discharge their pepper spray, if you allow your children to carry it (check your local laws). This could be useful for those in serious need, or to help avoid any horseplay with a defensive tool.
Another interesting product is the Eye Wash Device. This is fairly simple, though I’m surprised I haven’t seen a similar product prior to SHOT Show. Essentially this is a miniature, gravity fed eye wash station which screws onto the threads of a standard plastic water bottle. This allows for more focused rinsing when compared to simply pouring water on the face of someone exposed to pepper spray.
As an instructor who has received credentials in the instruction of pepper spray from both Mace and Agile Training & Consulting, I see this as a great tool to keep in your bag during class. Unfortunately, Sabre keeps this product behind a locked door on their website. You must have an account setup with them, which includes providing credentials for access. I’d love to know more, and to allow this safety device to be available to anyone. Clearly Sabre feels differently.
