Baby Primer Peak 2 (PP2) is nearing eight months old, and I have officially been out of the fourth trimester for awhile now! Time is flying with two under two, but I wanted to share some insight as a mom of multiple little kids.
Now you have two, or more, kiddos that you are responsible for!
When you go out alone you are officially outnumbered. You need to figure out how to move two kids in and out of stores, appointments, and other outings. Before venturing out with my two littles, I had my husband come with me. I was still healing from a C-Section, but I started to think through these transitions with an extra set of helpful hands, and an extra set of watchful eyes.
When I arrive at our location I will get Baby PP2 into their carrier or stroller and then go get Baby Primer Peak 1 (now Toddler Primer Peak). I can then have more hands available, and I limit the amount of time we are in a parking lot.
Before we head back to our car I move the keys into my front pocket, so they are easy to access while managing little kids. I have started placing Toddler Primer Peak into their car seat and locking their door. Then I load Baby PP2 and buckle them into their car seat and locking their door before returning to Toddler Primer Peak. Once Toddler Primer Peak is buckled, I get in and lock all of the car doors again.
You’ll want to make sure that your car is set up so that everything you need is readily accessible. I put Baby PP2’s carrier below their car seat so I don’t have to go digging for it in the back seat. I have the stroller pointed so that I can pull it out and immediately set it up. Set up your car so that you don’t have to spend unnecessary time in parking lots.
Even though Toddler Primer Peak was only 15 months when Baby PP2 was born I forgot how a newborn’s schedule works! They need to eat every 2-4 hours, and they need their diaper changed frequently. For the first few weeks I found myself taking more time than I expected because I hadn’t accounted for baby needing to eat and be changed. You will need to consider safe places to feed the baby while also accounting for the needs of your older child(ren). I’ve fed Baby PP2 in their carrier a lot so that I didn’t have to sit in a parking lot with a screaming toddler.
Speaking of feeding, I have had to start dressing in nursing friendly clothing again. For the brief time that Toddler Primer Peak was weaned before their sibling was born, I enjoyed not needing to consider boob access with my clothes.
Something we hadn’t considered until Baby PP2 was a few weeks old, was that we would have to really adjust how we would respond to immediate dangers. There will be times where responding to one child could put the other at risk. We began to consider this within our home as Toddler Primer Peak was climbing on furniture while Dad was holding Baby Primer Peak 2. It’s not something to consider lightly, and whenever possible strive to ensure the safety of all of your children.
Despite getting pregnant while still postpartum the first time, I forgot how this time went.
My biggest complaint is weight changes during postpartum. After baby is born I tend to drop all of the weight I gained during pregnancy (don’t hate me). Then I slowly gain some of it back in the coming months (breastfeeding hunger is no joke). It’s hard to feel comfortable in my clothes, and it’s even harder to try to feel comfortable in my clothes, while managing two littles, while ensuring breastfeeding access, AND trying to consider how I can conceal carry on top of it all.
All of that being said, be incredibly gracious with yourself. Your weight will likely continue to fluctuate until baby is weaned. Invest in some clothes you like in the interim, then work towards being a healthy weight when baby is a little older.
Finally, find a way that you can consistently conceal carry until you are ready, comfortable, and able to carry on body again. I talk a lot about off body carry in a fanny pack and purse. That’s the best way for me at this time in my life. This is the best way I can make sure I am able to protect my children and I if someone forces me to defend us.
Despite Toddler Primer Peak being the most refluxy baby to ever have lived, I didn’t think about this with them. Likely because I couldn’t figure out how to conceal carry with them when they were tiny.
One morning Baby Primer Peak 2 threw up down my shirt and into my bra. SO gross. My husband then pointed out that had I been wearing the Flashbang I likely would have had spit up also inside my gun.
For both moms and dads, you need to think about what you’ll do when you are out of the house. You likely pack a change of clothes for your kids (especially if they’re toilet training or in diapers), but not for yourself. I think it’s safe to say that most new parents have had baby vomit soak through their shirts at one point or another. (Or pee, if you’ve had a baby boy, for that matter). How will you manage baby fluids getting in contact with your gun? If you pack a change of clothes for yourself, will your new outfit conceal as well as what you left the house in?
Having kids is the best experience of my life thus far. While it certainly challenges me in more ways than I expected, I wouldn’t change it for the world. These Primer Peak Babies make me even more determined to make it home at the end of the day.
