Summertime Range Day Essentials [2025]

summertime range day essentials 2025

Summertime is here and our range days just got a little sweatier. Living in the American Southwest we’ve started adding a few more items to our desert range trips. Check out what Primer Peak editor, Dan, and I consider to be summer range trip essentials.

Sun Screen

In an incredibly counter culture belief, we love sunscreen. Whether or not you are worried about eventually developing skin cancer, we can all agree that a bright red sunburn hurts. Whatever you choose to use, remember to reapply every two hours.

Powder sunscreen
This is my personal favorite for reapplying sunscreen during the day. It keeps oily sunscreen off my fingers so I can continue having a strong grip.

Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) Shirts

UPF shirts have become a favorite of this Primer Peak writer since moving to a desert. I hate the feeling of sunscreen, so opting for a light weight, breathable shirt that protects my skin from the sun is perfect. I personally prefer to wear fishing shirts as they have vents to allow for more air circulation. Primer Peak editor Dan is often found wearing sun shirts with hoods on the range, and in class.

I like fishing shirts and a wide brim hat for some extra sun protection. I also don’t have to use as much sunscreen!

Canopy

Can you tell that we are big fans of staying out of the sun? Shortly after moving we added a canopy to our range day set up. Having the opportunity to sit in the shade for a few minutes in between reps has made the summertime range trips bearable. Having a break from the sun allows us necessary rest so we can continue having productive time on the range. We also recommend packing a couple camping chairs so you can sit in the shade. Why stand when you could sit?

Stroller Fan

We originally bought a stroller fan to use when I was in labor, and to keep air flowing on Baby Primer Peak when they were born last summer. Dan and I have continued to use these when we go to the range and around the house. We have ended up with three, and I would not be opposed to purchasing more! Don’t underestimate how nice a small fan feels blowing on your hot face. You can buy these and similar on Amazon, typically for less than $20.

Stroller fans provide enough air flow to make the desert heat almost tolerable.

Pedialyte

We start our range days with half a bottle of Pedialyte mixed with water, and we continue to drink that throughout the day. Pedialyte is the best at replenishing the electrolytes you lost while you were sweating in the summer sun. Pedialyte also has less calories and sugar AND a higher electrolyte content than Gatorade and other marketed sports drinks. Staying hydrated before, during, and after your summertime range trips will help you feel better overall.

Conclusion on Summertime Range Day Essentials

Don’t let the summer sun and heat keep you off the range. We know that summer time brings higher crime, and you need to continue training to keep your skills sharp. If you’ve been dreading the summer range trips, maybe try adding some of our range trip essentials. Stay hydrated, and have a great summer!
