FN America Issues Mandatory M249S Safety Recall

It seems that the recall isn't something that is foreign to any manufacturer these days, even the world's most battle proven. FN America has issued a mandatory M249S safety recall due to a defect in the fire control group. Both the Para and the Standard configuration are affected by the recall sadly, but FN has offered to make it right at no cost to the consumer.

This is exactly how a company should conduct a recall. Take notes, other manufacturers.

FN America says that the M249S' hammer group can fail to reset resulting in the M249S to cease function "causing an unsafe firing event." They don't dive into deep detail as to what that unsafe event might be, but I suspect you might get a slight runaway or the possibility of a double fire. FN USA also stated that not all rifles are going to be affected by this recall and that you should check your serial number against the FN M249S Safety Recall webpage before contacting FN.

If your serial number does fall within the affected range, stop using the rifle immediately and contact FN America at M249Srecall@fnamerica.com. You can also call the FN M249S Safety Recall support team at 1-800-635-1321, extension 145 Monday through Friday, 10 AM - 4 PM EST. All of the needed modification that falls under the M249S safety recall will be performed at no charge to the rifle's owner and shipping of the rifle will also be covered be FN America according to the press release.

Important: FN America does ask that you DO NOT ship any firearms to them for repair or to be serviced without a FedEx label being generated by them and sent. Please do not send the firearm without speaking with FN America.

Visit the FN America website for more information on their lineup of firearms.

FN America, LLC, announces the mandatory recall of certain FN M249S® semi-automatic, belt-fed rifles in both standard and PARA configurations. A recently identified design issue within the hammer group of the rifle may adversely affect the rifle’s reliability. Under certain circumstances, a reset failure within the hammer group may cause the M249S to cease to function, causing an unsafe firing event. To correct this condition and restore consistent, proper and safe operation of the firearm, it is necessary to replace the hammer group.

FN is instructing customers to discontinue use of these rifles immediately and return affected products to FN directly for installation of a new hammer group, at no cost.
