Recently while browsing Facebook I saw an industry personality talking how the ammunition situation is about to take a serious turn for the worse. The reasoning centered on nitrocellulose availability as a result of ongoing and future global conflicts. This isn’t the first time I’ve seen this exact line touted, with propellants first being widely discussed 12 to 18 months ago. That time was from a different personality, effectively saying that all commercial ammunition would dry up in under a year.
While various reasons for panic have come and gone in the firearms world for longer than I’ve been alive, it seems like it’s been getting worse over the past half decade. Or rather that people are saying it’s getting worse. Specifically those “in the know” are at the helm. These being national level instructors, writers, and other various Subject Matter Experts (SMEs).
A Recent History of Scares and Panics
Back in 2020’s “Summer of Love” I saw more than one of these people proclaiming that we’d be either locked up in prison camps, in the midst of a bloody civil war, or already dead by Christmas. That it was too late to prepare, and everyone needed to make their peace over the next few months. That didn’t pan out.
Fast forward to the end of President Biden’s time in office, the Fall of 2024. Some other SMEs loudly proclaimed “We are fucked” during a large training event. Biden would win again, the Dems would strip us of our rights, and we’d be hurtling towards a failed state of our own. Guess the crystal ball was out of tune for that one.
Once again I’m seeing people tell us that ammo supplies will dry up sooner than later. Even those rolling their own will be out of luck. This time it’s really gonna happen, so they say.
Sources, Reflections, and Looking Forward
Folks, it’s getting hard to trust “insider sources” and those who we typically trust to have insight into these things. You can only incorrectly proclaim the sky is falling so many times before people start to tune you out. Now that doesn’t mean things aren’t getting worse, a quick look at ammo prices (or any other price tag) will tell you that we’re on a downward trend. But whether this is the end of times or not remain to be seen.
Regardless of what wars are happening, who is in office, or what your favorite gun guy says, it’s a good idea to be prepared. Don’t panic, keep your head and look at your wants, needs, and resources. Think about any mistakes you made in 2020, and start to rectify those. Realistically another case of 5.56 probably isn’t high on the list.
Whatever you decide to do, don’t let internet soothsayers be the ones making your choices for you. With their track record, you’ll be barking up a tree without a paddle in no time.
